On Wednesday, 12 March, the Cape Consort, directed by Hans Huyssen, presents a Lent Consort at the St. Martini church in Long Street. Visiting sopranist Philipp Mathmann and Antoinette Huyssen are the soloists in a programme of sacred Baroque music including works by Strozzi, Schütz, Pergolesi, Vivaldi, Händel and Bach.
The concert forms part of the Music @ St Martini series, which aims to establish the historic St. Martini church as a regular venue for the performance of a diversity of sacred music.
Antoinette Huyssen needs no introduction to Cape Town audiences, who know her as one of the founding members of the Cape Consort, soloist in numerous oratorio performances, director of the Cape Town Chamber Choir and most recently as Cape Town Opera chorus master. She shares the stage with Philipp Mathmann, a sought-after German countertenor and sopranist, who not only has a highly successful international career as an opera singer and Early Music specialist, but is also a practicing ENT specialist and Honorary Research Affiliate at UCT. In press reviews he has been described as “man for the extreme heights. Especially in the soprano regions, where the air becomes thin, his head voice blossoms and acquires a radiance about which one can only marvel.”
Tickets at Quicket and at the door.
